Beer Tent to be added for 2017 Fair
The Boone County Board of Supervisors passed a motion that allows the Boone County Fair Board to sell alcohol after 4:00pm during the annual Boone County Fair. The Fair Board is excited about this new opportunity. Fair Board Manager Ashley Fitzgerald explains, "For several years now, members of the public have been asking for a beer garden during the fair so they could enjoy a drink while watching the grandstand shows or concerts. We are excited to move forward with this new opportunity for the Fair."
Before the Supervisors decision was made, the Fair Board outlined a specific plan for alcohol sales. The plan included security measures to ensure the safety of fairgoers, especially the 4-H and FFA youth that participate in the Fair. Alcohol sales and consumption will be limited to three secure areas on the fairgrounds: the pit area of the grandstand, one portion of the main area of the grandstand, and an area by the Leonard Good stage where concerts take place. Sales will only take place one half hour before the show begins, and will conclude approximately one half hour before the show ends, or by 11:30am (whichever comes first). Additionally, the Fair Board plans to hire off-duty officers to patrol during alcohol sales times providing security in addition to the regular night security patrol at the Fairgrounds.
The Fair board hopes adding a beer tent will also add revenue and help reach a different demographic of individuals to come out and enjoy the Fair. Information gathered from other counties in Iowa show that alcohol sales at fairs help drive grandstand event ticket sales and allows for a larger entertainment budget. This increases the Fair's ability to bring in bigger and better entertainment for future years.
Although alcohol sales during the Fair is new for 2017, the Fair Board is not new to safely managing and selling alcohol. With permission from the County Supervisors, the Fair Board has held a liquor license since 2013 selling alcohol during non-fair events at the fairgrounds.
The 2017 Boone County Fair is scheduled for July 13-16 and includes a great line up of events, entertainment, carnival, and fun for all. A complete list of Fair events and activities can be found on the Fair's website, www.boonecountyfairia.com.
